Vivid, thousand years of Japanese history on the street.
When I visited Kyoto in the summer 2013, immediately in love with this old city full of Japanese history. Unfortunately I couldn't catch any event or festival last time when I was there, so I decided to visited Kyoto again and putted one of the major festivals and one of the dramatic festival—Jidai Matsuri and Kurama Hi Matsuri in my itinerary.

Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages)
Jidda Matsuri held on the 22nd of October annually in Kyoto, is one of the major festivals(with two other, the Aoi Matsuri and Gion Matsuri); the main event is the historic parade, which are joined by more than 2,000 people in the period costumes. The parade departure from Kyoto Gosho (the old Imperial Palace)at noon, during about 5 km procession to Heian Shrine in the afternoon.
Couple days before the festival, the weather hasn't looked good and the forecast reported it gonna rain on the 22nd of October, so we were worried about if we are going to miss it or not; but fortunately, god gave us a cloudy day with a bit shower, even though it wasn't sunny but we still able to be there with joy and our cameras!
When we arrived in Kyoto Gosho before the festival, the people were getting ready for the parade, my French friend Monsieur L was so exciting to be surround by Japanese people in the period costumes, but for a Taiwanese like me, was not that impressive but still made me feel like in a scene of the period drama.
When there was no rain, and all the parade teams were staying here for prepare the show, we decided to do our own photographing before the parade started; we were so concentrated even forgot to keep eyes on each other(I even could not find Monsieur L after the parade start…)
Costumes range from Kimonos of the Heian period, which began in 794, to military uniforms worn under Meiji, the modernising emperor who shifted the power base to Tokyo(more information about the costumes range of the festival parade). The shower started just right after the parade began, so we were so lucky to got some good photo before it, and actually it was brilliant to take the photo in Kyoto Gosho rather than on the street, much easier to catch close-up portrait!
It wasn an awesome experience and a brilliant chance to see the Japanese culture, definitely worth to come!
